I am pretty transparent in general and this is definitely influences my approach to therapy. I believe using my personal experience with mental health in addition to the formal education is essential. My goal is to  normalize the role of mental health of our lives because we are all human. Keeping my own humanity at the forefront of my mind enables me to connect and explore with others their own humanity. I struggle- with the curveballs the human condition chucks at me daily. To sum it up I am a CIS married woman with one biological child and three canine children. I am late diagnosed ADHD, combined with comorbid diagnosis of Dysautonomia Disorder; Basically my brain over works and my automatic nervous system has a few shorts in it- makes for an interesting time. Being a mom is hard for me as I love my autonomy- for those familiar with enneagram I am a SOLID 5 wing 6- if your not familiar you will be if you decide to work with me!

Like a lot of therapist I fell into the job. My innate desire to understand led me to obtain a Criminal Justice degree in 2007. I quickly decided that was not the path for me- if we understood why crime occurred why not do something about it? This led me to pursuing my Masters in Social Work in 2011. My education journey took me all over the country and outside of my comfort zone {and for that I am forever grateful}. I learned so much about people through my interactions both inside and outside of the classroom.

Understanding that across humanity there are core truths that do not change based on religious affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identification, intellectual abilities, educational level, socioeconomic levels, use of substances, or involvement in the criminal justice system is at the heart of my practice. I believe to my core we are all humans just trying to human the best we can in a world that refuses to accept what it means to be a human.

I was born and raised in Eastern North Carolina so using metaphors, imagery, and humor when talking to people is my go to. It comes in handy when it comes time to sneak past those efficiently trained defense mechanisms to explore the disruptions in your life. I choose to look for the cause instead of treat only the symptoms- when we nurture the root of the issue the whole system functions better. Symptom management is necessary and essential to successful therapy so expect a large dose of support there; but honestly I want to work myself out of a job by empowering a deeper healing through understanding and acceptance.

My hope is that everyone leaves a session with me feeling seen, heard, support, and guided towards their identified goal. Each session will include a mix of light hearted conversation focused on building the therapeutic rapport needed to facilitate the change. Honoring the truth that each person is the expert on their life, body and mind embracing their knowledge regarding the situation is vital. I try to share information and resources with clients to build their "toolbox" because if I have done my job I will not be in their lives forever.
